Nicole Yap recently took part in our General Learning Disabilities Online CPD course. She did so along with others in her school as part of a group booking. Read her thoughts below!
“I am truly delighted to have finished this course. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about effective strategies to enhance my learning of students with General Learning Disabilities (GLD).
Learning about each diagnosis at the start, the terminology and causes as well as understanding important theories surrounding the learning process for students with GLD was highly beneficial.
This course has given me the confidence to approach students with GLD as well as students with behaviour problems. In terms of improving literacy with students, I now have a more detailed understanding on how to do this.
This CPD course also helped to highlight the importance of developing a safe and colourful classroom for students with GLD. This course focused on the importance of developing visuals, graphic designers and differentiated posters with key words. I found this to be the most important aspect of the course for me as I am a strong believer of a healthy and caring rapport with students to achieve their learning needs and help them to reach their goal and utmost potential.
During my everyday practice, I will now develop lesson plans that cater to the needs of all my students. I will focus strongly on differentiation and creating extracurricular activities that are inclusive. I will create a writing club and focus on the importance of handwriting, punctuation, and spelling. However, I will differentiate the instructions for students with GLD and encourage them to integrate with all students, that will help develop their social skills and critical thinking.
To be entirely honest, before starting this course, I felt unconfident in certain areas regarding GLD. Now, I am ready to conquer the next academic year as I have newly joined the SEN team at my school. I am ready to focus on integrating with my colleagues, students and parents when developing appropriate assessments and creating effective Individual Education Plans (IEPs).”
